It must be easier for laid-off employees to retrain quickly in order to find a job in a different field. The future chairman of the employers’ organization VNO-NCW Ingrid Thijssen will argue for this on Saturday in the AD. Thijssen will succeed the current chairman Hans de Boer on Tuesday.
The forthcoming president sees a major role for retraining in the forthcoming economic crisis, in order to prevent a large part of the population from being unemployed for a longer period of time. Unemployment is already slowly rising, but it is expected that the major blows will not fall until later in the year and possibly early next year. Thijssen therefore calls the corona crisis the worst economic crisis since the 1930s.
“The tradition now is that we first say goodbye to people. They land in unemployment and from benefits they end up in a new job. While it would be much better to let the bartender who is now being fired become a heating installer right away.” , said Thijssen, to the newspaper.
Employers have a major role to play in getting this change under way. According to Thijssen, they should look less at diplomas and more at talent. “Companies must be willing to hire and train someone,” said Thijssen, who was voted Top Woman of the Year in 2016.
