New Viennese “Tatort”: When Colonel Ernstl dances

A good Austrian might now say: “I’m going crazy,” because Ernstl is dancing. To be more precise, the always correct Colonel Ernst Rauter (Hubert Kramar) fidgets for a second or two in a hip-hop video in which his dream team of investigators Bibi Fellner (Adele Neuhauser) and Moritz Eisner (Harald Krassnitzer) act like they’re all big shots and rap in a nighttime street scene. But it’s all just a (nightmare) dream from which Bibi quickly wakes up – a wonderfully absurd and surprising scene in this Austrian “Tatort” called “Deine Mutter” (Sunday, 8:15 p.m., ARD). With fresh Viennese blood, the far too long summer break for Sunday murder TV comes to an end.

Hip-hop with misogynistic lyrics

Since crime TV is not exactly short of all kinds of gangsters, it was time for a gangster-rapper “Tatort”, because this genre is full of criminal energy. When TV producers delve into special youth and music scenes, it can get embarrassing, but director Mirjam Unger has put a lot of effort into making everything as authentic as possible, with the help of musician Yugo. He made sure that the poses and words were right. He himself plays the up-and-coming hip-hop star Ted Candy, who is found beaten to death in an underground car park one night. He had a falling out with his sinister mentor Akman 47 (Murat Seven). He is one of the toughest kind, who makes videos that glorify violence and spits out misogynistic lyrics. Ted apparently wanted to break up with him and switch to another music label. But he also has a falling out with his mother.

Gangster rappers also shoot live ammunition

There are plenty of conflicts, but they are the basis of the business in gangster rap, where showing off, showing off and ranting are all part of the good, bad tone. Not only words fly, but bullets fly too. The most prominent victims include the scene stars Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG. Just a few days ago, the rapper Challa was shot from a car in Berlin.

Actually, this “Tatort” with its rapper quarrel – known in the scene as “beef” – would be better set in Berlin, because that’s where Fler and Bushido, who in turn was connected to the notorious Abou-Chaker clan, were at loggerheads for years. But with an investigative team from the capital, it would have been a very serious matter – and the Viennese duo always provide lighter moments, even if you don’t really believe Moritz, who is a little disturbed in his relationships, when he says in hip-hop jargon that this “track” is “really cool shit”. But that’s just real Viennese humor, which doesn’t even stop at a dancing Colonel Ernstl.
