Bad weather: violent thunderstorms and gale force winds in Sicily and Calabria
Red alert in Sicily
The Mediterranean cyclone which for a few days has been literally scrambling some areas of the South such as Sicily and part of the Calabria, has turned into a real one Medicane, a kind of Category 1 hurricane so to speak.
On the basis of the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which are responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions. The weather phenomena, impacting on the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).
The notice foresees, from the evening of Thursday 28 October and tomorrow, Friday 29 October, very abundant rainfall, mainly stormy, on Sicily. The phenomena will be accompanied by strong showers, local hailstorms, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind. Furthermore, strong to stormy winds are expected, mainly from the eastern quadrants, with gusts up to strong storms, on Calabria and Sicily, with storm surges along the exposed coasts.

The meteorological framework and the critical issues forecast for Italy is updated daily on the basis of new forecasts and the evolution of the phenomena, and is available on the website of the Department of Civil Protection (www.protezionecivile.gov.it), together with the general rules of behavior to be taken in case of bad weather. The information on the regional alert levels, on the specific criticalities that could affect the individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will monitor the evolution of the situation.
