“PCR tests carried out in two large laboratories in Lebanon have shown the presence of a genetic mutation in the virus. 50% of the tests carried out in the past few days have revealed the existence of a new type of virus. The danger is that it spreads more quickly “, worried the deputy. “We do not yet know if we are facing a new type of virus or if it is the coronavirus that has evolved,” said Mr. el-Mokdad. According to the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar, these two laboratories where the mutation was detected are located in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Lebanon has been re-confined for eight days and under total curfew since yesterday, as part of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The country’s hospitals are overloaded by the explosion of cases of contamination following the relaxation of protective measures during the end of the year celebrations. “We can no longer find places for patients, even in emergencies,” said the member of the parliamentary health committee. “What is striking is the high number of contaminations among young people,” he further noted.
