New Variant of COVID-19 EU.1.1: Contagiousness and Implications

Jakarta

Recently the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tracking a new variant of COVID-19 named EU.1.1. The Omicron subvariant is said to be more contagious than other variants or subvariants. It was even reported to have triggered a significant increase in cases in several European countries.

Even though it is claimed to be more contagious, a researcher from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, Marc Johnson, PhD, said that so far it is not known whether the COVID-19 EU.1.1 variant will pose a threat to the world or not.

“I think we’re going to see a lot of this happening, where you’re going to see some subvariants increasing proportionately and then disappearing and new ones appearing and disappearing,” he said.

The same thing was also expressed by researchers from the New York Institute of Technology and Arkansas State University at Jonesboro Rajendram Rajnarayanan, PhD. According to him, this new variant has no advantages or advantages over the variants or sub-variants currently circulating in the world.

Even so, he cautioned those who belong to risk groups, such as people with comorbidities to the elderly, to immediately get a COVID-19 booster vaccine. This is useful for preventing the risk of worsening symptoms from this new subvariant.

“EU.1.1 is definitely more infectious than the Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant. But it has no advantages over the currently circulating variants or subvariants,” said Rajendram Rajnarayanan, PhD, from the New York Institute of Technology and Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, to MedPage Today .

Previously, the CDC estimated that EU.1.1 already accounted for around 1.7 percent of US cases nationwide. Also, it may have as many as 8.7 percent of cases in some regions, such as Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
