New Vaccine Development Against Haemophilus Influenzae Type B: Advancements in Carbohydrate Synthesis

On July 23, 2004, the prestigious magazine Science publishes an article on the creation of a new vaccine against the bacteria Haemophilus influenzae type b, which causes meningitis and pneumonia.

This vaccine was developed by a team from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana and four other Cuban research centers. Vaccines against this bacterium already existed, but the research team applied an innovative technique, a large-scale chemical synthesis of carbohydrates, which could be developed into vaccines against other bacteria.

Infections by Haemophilus influenzae Type b were common in developing countries until effective vaccines could be developed in the 1990s. In developing countries, there are still some 600,000 child deaths each year due to pneumonia and meningitis caused by this bacterium.
