Hundreds flocked to Times Square to celebrate.
The metropolis on the US east coast is considered to be predominantly liberal and democratic, and according to initial results, Joe Biden won the majority of the votes there. The metropolis is also the birthplace of the still incumbent US President Donald Trump.
In Washington, Biden supporters flocked to the White House. With a hoot of horns and cheers, they moved towards the official residence of the president to celebrate the victory of the 77-year-old Democrat. TV stations also showed pictures from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with people partying.
Shortly before, several US broadcasters had proclaimed Biden the election winner. After a bitter election battle, the former Vice President finally prevailed in a head-to-head race against the Republican incumbent Donald Trump. It had taken four days to announce his election victory.
