At the beginning of February, we wrote about the upcoming update for the PlayStation 5 console, which was supposed to bring a number of useful functions. At that moment, the new system software began to be tested in beta. But today is officially released and as we pointed out last time, it brings several interesting news. So let’s take it in order.
On PlayStation 5, you can now join voice chat via Discord. This is useful, for example, for playing cross-platform games and connecting with teammates who use other systems. First, you need to pair your account on Discord and PSN via the console, the PlayStation.com website or the Discord app on PC, Mac or mobile.
The big news is also support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) at 1440p resolution. The PlayStation 5 started supporting this resolution only recently, but until now it was only possible without VRR. That is changing now. Currently, the PS5 can also use the 1440p resolution on a wider range of compatible displays.
An inconspicuous but pleasant novelty also applies to gamepads. Now you can update DualSense wirelessly. Until now, it was only possible with the help of a cable. The gamepad will now only ask for it if you run into a glitch during the update.
Titles can be sorted and filtered when added to the gamelist. You can also find games for PS VR and PS VR2 more easily.
PS5 now handles saved positions from PS4 games better. When we download or install a title from PS4 to PS5, a notification appears that you have saved positions in the cloud, if they are not already on the console. Just click and use them. The same notification will also appear if you install the PS5 version of the game, which can handle PS4 saves.
The function where you can manually upload recorded footage or screenshots to the PlayStation app on your mobile is also handy. Until now, this was only possible in bulk and automatically. The game library has been improved. Titles can be sorted and filtered when added to the gamelist. You can also find games for PS VR and PS VR2 more easily.
You can start or request screen sharing directly from a friend’s profile. There is a new button in the party chat for quick connection to the selected game. The game screen has also been updated, where you can see which of your friends own the game, who is online and who is currently playing it.
All data from one PS5 to another including games, saves, profiles, settings, screenshots and videos can be transferred via Wi-Fi or LAN. This can be done not only when setting up the console for the first time, but also later. And this process will not delete data from the source PlayStation. The screen reader and voice instructions in some regions have also been improved.
You can find more details about the update in our older article.
