Monsignor Joji Vadakara, Vatican City
A joint press release by the five committees of the United Nations states that more people are dying of hunger in the world than in 2019. In the last three years alone, more than twelve crore people have been caught in the grip of hunger, according to the report released by various committees like the United Nations Food Fund, Child Welfare Fund and World Health Organization. According to recent studies, about seventy-three and a half million people in the world are suffering from hunger. In 2019, it was sixty one crore.
According to the study of various assemblies of the United Nations, the covid epidemic faced by humanity in the previous years, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, climate crises and change etc. have made the life of ordinary people miserable in the world and caused the increase in hunger. The report was released on Wednesday, 12 July by the United Nations, entitled “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” (SOFI).
According to the reports of the United Nations, between 2021 and 2022 there was not much change in terms of food security, but the world food crisis has increased in 2022. Although the fight against hunger in Asia and Latin America has produced better results, in 2022 there has been an increase in the number of people suffering from hunger in West Asian countries, the Caribbean region and various parts of the African continent. It is estimated that one fifth of the world is hungry. The African continent is most affected by the food crisis.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Gutiérrez said in a video message during the presentation of the report related to the 2022 statistics that he hopes to find a solution to the problems related to the food crisis and access to nutrition in various countries by 2030, but there is a need to build resilience against the current conflicts and the impacts created by the climate crisis.
