New UK corona numbers support Johnson’s easing plan | Abroad

The latest figures support Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his plans to ease the strict lockdown now, even as scientists continue to warn of virus mutations. Speaking at the kick-off of the Conservative party’s campaign for local elections in May, Johnson promised people Saturday the possibility of a pint of beer and a visit to the hairdresser.

Johnson said the massive vaccination and his government’s business-friendly policies will spur the recovery of the economy. “Shot after shot, job after job.” He admitted that a third Covid wave is currently washing over Europe and that it could also reach Great Britain in about three weeks. “The crucial difference is that any increase in infections and hospitalizations is adequately mitigated by the vaccination campaign.”

Wales already took an advance on Saturday by lifting travel restrictions in the country as measures taken appear to have contained the deadly second corona wave this winter. In England, the ‘stay-at-home rule’ is less strict from Monday. Groups of up to six people are then allowed to meet outside.
