New Trick in WhatsApp Account Hijacking Scam: How Scammers Hack WhatsApp and Borrow Money

There is a new trick in the WhatsApp account hijacking scam. “Sing Tao Complaint King” received reports from readers stating that a scammer hacked into his WhatsApp; even though he had already set up a 6-digit two-factor authentication for WhatsApp, the scammer could still pretend to be himself and use WhatsApp to ask friends to borrow money for emergencies. .

The victim, Mr. Cheng (pseudonym), recalled that when he was having dinner with his family this Sunday (24th), the family member sitting next to him received a text message sent from Mr. Cheng’s WhatsApp number, saying that he wanted to borrow 10,000 yuan. Just when Mr. Cheng felt confused, it turned out that another friend had also received a WhatsApp message from him, and the content was also about borrowing money. Fortunately, the friend was alert and believed that Mr. Cheng’s WhatsApp had been hacked and sent a scam text message, so he called to remind him.

Mr. Cheng recalled: “I could not see any conversation messages between the scammers and my friends. In addition, when I found out that my account had been hacked, I notified everyone through WhatsApp to remind relatives and friends not to be scammed, but these messages were deleted on 1 Within 2 seconds, it will be deleted by the scammer.”

Mr. Cheng said that he has always used two-factor authentication on WhatsApp, but unexpectedly it was still lost. He insisted that he never typed in unfamiliar links, so he had no idea when or how he was hacked. Cheng revealed that his brother almost transferred $5,000 to a fraudster because of this. Fortunately, he notified his brother in time so he did not incur any losses. Mr. Cheng finally filed a report at the police station.

Another reader, Ms. Chen, had a similar experience last Friday. Ms. Chen originally asked a friend who traveled to Japan to search for her favorite handbags at the Hermes store. Unexpectedly, on the same day, the scammer hacked into Ms. Chen’s WhatsApp account and asked her friend to send her NT$20,000 via FPS, promising to pay her back the next day. Fortunately, her friend saw this and was not fooled, and immediately notified her through her friend. her. Similarly, Ms. Chen cannot see the message asking friends to count in her WhatsApp.

Chen Diyuan, chairman of the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Association, analyzed that citizens’ WhatsApp has been partially invaded, and the biggest chance is that it is connected to other devices. “In the past, when using the web version of WhatsApp, you could only use one device at the same time, and the phone also had to be turned on before it could be used. However, earlier WhatsApp launched a new feature that allows up to 5 devices to use the web version of WhatsApp at the same time. Users who may have been affected previously used public I didn’t log out of the computer, so someone stole my access rights.”

Chen Diyuan pointed out that another situation is that the person uses WhatsApp on an iPad, but because the iPad does not have a WhatsApp app, he can only rely on a third-party app to log in, so hackers took the opportunity to hack into it.

Experts teach one simple trick to repel hackers

What should be done if a citizen reveals that their WhatsApp account has been hacked secretly? Chen Diyuan pointed out that this situation is different from the dilemma where the WhatsApp account is completely hijacked and he is unable to log in; as long as the person involved can still use WhatsApp, he only needs to perform a simple action to cut off the connection with the scammer.

“The client only needs to cancel all connected devices in the WhatsApp settings, and the scammer’s login will immediately become invalid. This is because the moment the client was hacked, that is, when connecting to other devices, he just scanned the dynamic QR code without input. Password or verification code, so the only link the scammer can use to access your account is the authorization from your mobile phone. As long as the authorization is terminated, the problem should be solved.”

Although the new mode of hijacking WhatsApp accounts is relatively easy to deal with, if you want to protect your account security in the long term, you can refer to the police’s anti-fraud suggestions, including enabling two-layer authentication, logging out of all unknown connected devices, and not disclosing it to anyone. Any password or code.
