After successfully completing the course, a total of 17 training assistants for swimming and 11 for lifeguarding received their certificates from Bernd Marquard, chairman of the DLRG district association Offenbach-Land, in Seligenstadt.

“The training assistant for swimming and lifeguarding is the second qualification level for the trainer license after the lifeguard training”, explains Volkmar Engelbert, head of training in the district association. Building on this, the DLRG offers the training license of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), which the DLRG internally calls a “teaching certificate”.

The corona pandemic not only led to a training backlog for swimming courses and swimming badges, but also for the training of new training assistants and trainers from the DLRG. In the past year, due to Corona, no new training assistants and trainers could be trained. “Fortunately, we were able to catch up a lot this year,” said Marquard. A total of nine new training assistants are coming from Seligenstadt, six from Egelsbach and five from Hainburg.

This year, part of the training as a training assistant took place online for the first time. “A large part of the training has to take place practically in the water with the children in the swimming course. The best online tools cannot replace that, ”adds Tatiana Schmitt, who together with Hans-Jürgen Schmitt and Volkmar Engelbert conducted the course for participants from all over Hesse.

Engelbert hopes that all newly trained assistants will also get the DOSB training certificate in the next few years. “Since all swimming courses in the DLRG can only be carried out by trained staff, we depend on as many of our volunteer members as possible to receive further training,” explains Engelbert.

Bernd Marquard, finally thanked all trainers and course participants for their commitment. “It is not a matter of course that so much time and energy is invested in voluntary work today.” Marquard also pointed out that the DLRG local groups are already at their limit due to Corona. “Many branches are currently running additional swimming courses to teach as many children as possible to swim in order to prevent a generation of non-swimmers.”

From Seligenstadt, Joel Fischer, Jörg Harbrecht, Leandra Harbrecht, Helena Pfister, Natalie Prieshof, Barbara Rickert, Luzie Schymura, Julia Weyland and Gayan Wijenayake completed their training as swimming training assistants and Jörg Harbrecht, Leandra Harbrecht, Natalie Prieshof and Barbara Rickert also trained as Lifeguard training assistant.
