Ottawa (awp / afp) – The Canadian trade balance remained in the green in July with a record level of imports and exports and activity peaking with the United States.
Canada’s merchandise trade surplus narrowed to C $ 778 million (€ 521 million) from $ 2.6 billion in June, the national statistics institute said Thursday.
Total imports rose 4.2% in July to an all-time high of $ 53.0 billion, including gains in the automotive, electronic and electrical equipment and parts sectors.
After a strong increase in June, total exports edged up 0.6% in July to reach $ 53.7 billion, “another record high,” said the institute. “The increases recorded in different product sections were partially offset by a sharp decrease in lumber exports,” said the institute in its press release.
As for commercial activity with the American neighbor, it also reached records – imports and exports standing at unprecedented levels. Canada’s trade surplus with the United States fell to $ 6.7 billion in July.
In contrast, imports from other countries fell 2.6% in July, falling for the second month in a row. Imports from China, Mexico and Japan posted the largest declines.
