New tombs will be opened at Perperikon – 2024-03-13 14:43:15

/ world today news/ Two new tombs will be opened on the Assumption hill of Perperikon. Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov’s team discovered them east of the medieval church of the rock sanctuary, reports Standard. They are very well shaped from blocks of stone that have not been opened up to this point.

In addition to the tombs, about 15 new graves that have been discovered around the Cathedral of the Bishops of Perperikon will also be shown today. In the eastern part of the Acropolis there are churches from the 13th-14th centuries. The residence is expected to be opened there.

Around the churches are the necropolises. So far, archaeologists have uncovered over 100 graves from the 13th-14th centuries. “Just a week ago we came across part of the gold hoard of the bishops of Perperikon – 11 gold and six silver coins, which have caused enormous interest along with those that we know were taken out by treasure hunters 20 years ago.

It is about one of the largest coin hoards that ever existed with almost 50 gold coins,” said Prof. Ovcharov.
