New Toll Prices in Greece for 2023: Increases Announced by National Highway Concessionaires

The new toll prices, which will come into effect on January 1, have been published by the six national highway concessionaires in Greece. There will be no toll increases on the “Atiki” and “Egnatia” highways, Boyka Atanasova, the correspondent of the “Trud” newspaper in Greece, reports.

According to the arrangements with the Ministry of Infrastructure, the increases range from 7% to 7.5%, which means, for example, that the route Athens – Thessaloniki for a passenger car increases by 2.20 euros, and the route Athens – Ioannina (via the bridge Rio – Antirio) with 2.75 euros.

Increases vary on average between 7%-7.5%, which, depending on the amount of the initial fee and the category of the vehicle, varies from 0.10 euros (for Veligosti Arcadia toll taxi motorcycles) to 4.5 euros (for buses with more of 40 places on the Rio – Antirio bridge).

Due to these increases from the new year, the toll for a car will be:

The Athens – Thessaloniki route (including the Malgara toll, which belongs to Egnatia Odos) will cost €33.55 from €31.35 today (an increase of 7%).

The Athens – Patras route will cost €12.60 from €11.80 (an increase of 6.8%).

The route Athens – Kalamata will cost 15 euros from 13.95 (7% increase).

The Athens – Ioannina route via the Rio – Antirio bridge will cost €41 from €38.25 (a 7.2% increase).

The route Athens – Trikala (via E65) will cost 19.35 euros from 17.95 euros (7.6% increase).

Tolls will increase in the next two years as well. As agreed with the Ministry of Infrastructure, the concessionaires will bear a small part (2%) of the increase for 2023 (12%), and the rest will be borne by the tolls for 2025 and 2026. 2% each year will be add to the increase.

The “Egnatia” highway (plus the most vertical axes and the underwater connection of Aktion – Preveza) is still state-owned. In recent years, no increases have been imposed, only corrections after the creation of new toll stations. “Egnatia” is in the process of privatization and the 2018 legislation stipulates that before a contract is signed, toll prices must be increased, instead of 0.03 euros per kilometer to date, 0.04 euros are charged per kilometer.

However, the concession process has been “frozen” for months because problems with its financing had to be solved. Signing is expected in 2024.
