“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” should land right at the top of the watch list for many. For us, the 2018 film was one of the “best and most intense cinema experiences of the year” and received the full 5 stars.
The FILMSTARTS review of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
The focus is on Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), whose daughter was raped and murdered months ago. Because the investigation does not reveal anything, the grieving mother is convinced that the police are not doing enough for their boss William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). Without further ado, she rents three billboards and denounces the failure with provocative slogans. Since the simplistic deputy deputy Jason Dixon (Sam Rockwell) sees this as a personal attack, a chain of events is set in motion.
In our FILMSTARTS review we praise the masterpiece by director Martin McDonagh (“See Bruges … and die?”, “7 Psychos”) as “small marvel of narrative balance: Deep pain and laconic dry humor, unexpected twists and turns and an organic flow of plot, characters that change and yet always remain themselves ”- McDonagh brings all of this under one roof. Definitely worth seeing!
“Shazam!”
The DC superhero adaptation “Shazam!” Was made in 2019 and immediately stood out from the DC universe, which had been darker for a long time with “Batman V Superman”, “Justice League” and the like. We enthusiastically note a “pleasantly grounded, emotional and playful superhero blockbuster” in our review.
The FILMSTARTS review of “Shazam”
In “Shazam!” Orphan boy Billy Batson (Asher Angel) ends up in a mysterious cave shortly after arriving at a new foster family, where a magician gives him powers. When he pronounces the word “Shazam”, he becomes a grown-up superhero (Zachary Levi). It is urgently needed to protect the sinister Dr. Stop Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). One problem, however, is that the superhero is still an immature teenager despite his changed appearance …
“Shazam!” Is a great homage to the 80s, because the spirit of teen film guru John Hughes and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment (“ET – The Extra-Terrestrial”) is always present here, we praise it in our 4-star review and come to the conclusion: “Quick-witted. Touching. Funny. A comic blockbuster for everyone who needs a break from the dull mania for armaments in the superhero genre. “
