New Therapy Developed for Severe Asthma Cases: Safer Than Cortisone-Based Agents

According to Dupont, progress in the fight against asthma has mainly been made in other areas. For severe cases, which the pneumologist estimates to be around three percent of patients, there is a new type of therapy that replaces cortisone-based agents.

Some of those old medications, such as Medrol, have some serious side effects such as osteoporosis, muscle weakness and an increased risk of diabetes.

The new medication works with so-called monoclonal antibodies. These are proteins that carry out targeted attacks on the molecules that cause asthma attacks.

Such medication is quite easy to take. Patients need to inject every 2, 4 or 8 weeks, depending on the specific medication they are taking. “They can usually do that themselves. Many of these products work with a pen system such as a diabetes syringe,” says Dupont.
