New theory about the sabotage

The information appears in a new intelligence report and is the first known significant clue pointing in the direction of who was responsible for the attack, writes the newspaper. and refers to US officials

Investigators on both sides of the Atlantic have struggled to find out who was behind the explosions at the gas pipeline last year. Nord Stream was used to bring Russian gas to Europe.

American sources also tell the New York Times that there are no signs that the Ukrainian authorities were involved in the sabotage.

Lots of speculation

There has been much speculation as to who may have been behind the sabotage on 26 September. Many in the West quickly suspected the Russian authorities. But Ukraine, Great Britain and the United States have also been accused of having carried out the explosions. Recently, there were also undocumented accusations that Norway had been part of the operation.

US officials say there is still much they do not know about the perpetrators and their affiliations. Newly obtained information suggests it is opposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but provides no details about the group’s members or who directed or paid for the operation.

Does not conclude

The officials will also not say what kind of intelligence information is involved, where it comes from or how strong the evidence is. They say the material does not provide any clear conclusions. Thus, the possibility is open that it may have been carried out by unofficial actors with links to Ukraine’s authorities and security forces.

Officials who have seen the intelligence say they believe the saboteurs were most likely Ukrainian or Russian citizens. US officials say no US or British citizens were involved.
