Corona virus: new test within minutes approved – A new antigen test for the corona virus has been approved. This is a completely new test category. However, these tests also come with a rather negative aspect.
In the United States, the FDA has approved an emergency antigen test for coronavirus for the first time. In a letter from the FDA on the matter, it says that it is a new test category that is able to deliver results within minutes.
Nose swabs are taken in which protein components of Sars-CoV-2 can then be detected.
In all methods used to date, either antibodies to corona are detected with blood samples or a genetic test is used to isolate virus genes. The FDA emphasizes that the new nasal swab procedure delivers faster results.
However, these tests are less sensitive than genetic tests. In Germany, an infection with Sars-CoV-2 is determined by genetic test, but studies on new antibody test methods are already underway.
The German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) was unable to provide information on the status of such antigen tests in Germany on Sunday.
