The RAS covers parts of Montiggl, Rungg and Villanders with new DAS mobile radio technology – a landscape-friendly innovation.

In recent days, the RAS, in cooperation with the municipalities of Eppan and Villanders and the mobile phone operators, has covered the areas near the Montiggler lakes, the section of road near the Montiggl campsite, the Rungg sports centre and the area around the car park on the Villanderer Alm with mobile phone coverage.

The new mobile communications technology DAS (Distributed Antenna System) takes the mobile communications signals from the four mobile operators Tim, Wind, Vodafone and Iliad from existing transmitter sites and transports them to the unserved areas via fiber optic connections. The signals are amplified at small transmitter masts erected there and sent via shared antennas.

“With this new technology, we are able to provide even remote areas with modern mobile communications in a cost-effective and landscape-friendly manner,” emphasizes Governor Arno Kompatscher. The joint transmission of all mobile operators via a transmission system has the advantage that transmission masts can be built smaller and not every individual operator has to build additional expensive mobile stations. “With this solution, we are improving the digital connection and at the same time increasing the safety of the population. In an emergency, rapid communication with the emergency services is now guaranteed at all times,” says RAS Director Georg Plattner, listing further advantages.

In the municipality of Eppan, the mobile phone signals of all four mobile phone operators are received at the existing transmitter site in Girlan and transported via fiber optic to an existing light mast at the Rungg sports center and to small transmitter masts at the Montiggl campsite and at the deer sites above the small Montigglersee. The antennas for the joint transmission of all mobile phone signals were installed at these three locations.

To supply the area around the car park on the Villanderer Alm, the mobile phone signals from all four operators are received at the existing transmitter site in Reinswald (municipality of Sarntal) and transported over the pass to Villanders using an existing fiber optic connection. The signals are amplified at the transmitter mast at the Villanderer Alm car park and transmitted via a common transmitting antenna.

With DAS technology, these areas can now be better served. Data can be accessed at speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (Mbit/s). Emergency services can be notified more quickly, especially in the event of an emergency.
