Villagers are working in the Tengri Desert to lay the new chessboard-like sand barrier made of brush-shaped straw net ropes.
China has made a new breakthrough in combating desertification: In Zhongwei in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, a new sand control technology – a checkerboard sand barrier made of brush-shaped straw net ropes – was recently introduced.
The new technology will replace traditional straw checkerboard technology that has been used to combat desertification for more than half a century. The effectiveness of the new chessboard-like sand barrier is over 60 percent higher than that of traditional hand-made chessboards. Their maintenance costs, on the other hand, are more than ten percent less. The service life of the new types of chessboards will also double from three to six years compared to the previous ones. Experts are of the opinion that the “Rubik’s Cubes of China” have seen a rise in level.
