New technology for Ukrainian F-16: Jet pilots can now hit more accurately

Ukrainian F-16 pilots are using advanced helmet systems that could significantly improve their capabilities when using the jets against Russian forces. The helmets, called Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS), were jointly developed by Israeli defense companies Elbit Systems and Collins Aerospace. The report states “Newsweek“.

The high-tech helmets improve the pilots’ situational awareness and make it easier to aim at targets. They are particularly effective with the AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles, which Ukraine has also received.

Technological advantage for the Ukrainian Air Force

“We are now in a new phase of the development of our air force,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said at the weekend. A pro-government platform showed images of Ukrainian personnel with the JHMCS and described it as a “huge advantage” for the Ukrainian F-16 pilots. According to “Newsweek”, Russian pilots do not have a comparable system.

At the beginning of the month, Kyiv officially confirmed that the first F-16s had arrived and were already being used by the Ukrainian Air Force. “I am proud of all our guys who have mastered these aircraft and are already using them for our country,” said President Volodymyr Zelensky. The NATO countries Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Belgium have promised Ukraine a total of around 80 jets.

F-16: A significant support for Ukraine

Although the F-16s alone do not provide a decisive advantage, according to Newsweek they are a significant addition to Ukraine’s war-weakened Soviet aircraft.

However, they are also an attractive target for Russian forces. To use the jets effectively and minimize the risk of being shot down, Ukraine must use long-range weapons to disable Russian air defense systems deep behind the front line, according to Western analysts.

Attacks on Russian air defenses necessary

According to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukraine must continue to attack Russian air defense facilities in its hinterland and in the occupied territories in order to keep its F-16 jets operational.

Kyiv has repeatedly targeted Russian air defense systems and has reported several times in recent months that it has successfully hit air defense systems in Russian-held territory. On Saturday, the Ukrainian military said it had significantly damaged four missile launchers of a Russian S-400 air defense system in Crimea.
