New tank shelters and warehouses are being opened at the Adaži / Article military base

As the alliance presence in Adaža grows, so does the need for a larger and more modern military base. On Wednesday, new tank sheds, equipment warehouses were opened, as well as other infrastructure development works.

“This project is more than 7 million euros. It is just another commitment to combat the aggression that may be happening around it. It is also part of Canada’s commitment to increase our forces here. We’re bringing in more forces, more people. We’re also bringing in equipment. And then we’re deploying equipment in this infrastructure.” explained the commander of the Canadian Armed Forces Command in Latvia, Colonel Jaimes Smits.

“Why do we need our tanks here?

If we leave them in Canada, it will be difficult to bring them to Latvia when they are needed. So putting the equipment here gives us the flexibility to respond immediately.”

The construction projects started in 2023 and were implemented in about a year. They are funded by Canada and Spain.

Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Atis Shvinka (“Progressives”) said that the project shows Canada’s ability to act quickly:

“Canada is the direct lead country in the form of a multinational brigade and is taking great responsibility and leadership. And this project is one big proof that Canada was able to do this project in a very short time. To be built within a year. And from It is a very short time to realize an idea and this cooperation in the field of defense and weapons is very important. “

As we continue to develop, a signal will be sent to the potential aggressor that we, together with our allies, are ready to defend our country.

“In fact, the attacker sees that our capabilities are growing every day and that we are becoming more secure every day,” said Schwinka.

There are 14 countries in the multinational NATO brigade led by Canada. It will consist of more than 3,500 soldiers. It will reach full completion by 2026.
