Hetanews.com – The SARS-CoV-2 corona virus pandemic has infected more than 33.8 million people and killed more than 1 million people in the world, until Wednesday (30/9/2020) morning. As the corona virus outbreak that causes Covid-19 spreads throughout the world, scientists continue to dig and find more potential symptoms of this deadly disease.
Previously we knew that the most common symptoms of the corona virus were fever, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and loss of the ability to smell and taste. Now, a study claims that tiny bumps on the tongue could be a potential symptom of the coronavirus.
The study examined hundreds of patients at a hospital in Madrid, Spain. The mean age of the patients involved in the study was 56 years. Meanwhile, around 58 percent of respondents are women.
As reported by the International Business Times, Saturday (26/9/2020), half of the patients experienced mucocutaneous manifestations in the form of an immune deficiency syndrome that severely affects the hands and feet.
Immune deficiency syndrome or immunodeficiency disorder is a disorder of the immune system. The patient’s immune system will decrease, so that he is more prone to getting sick and experiencing various types of infections. Reported by SehatQ, immunodeficiency is divided into two types:
Primary immunodeficiency, a type of immune system disorder that is present at birth.
Secondary immunodeficiency, which is the type that is acquired at a later date. This type is more common than the primary type.
A quarter of patients have a rash in the mouth, the most common of which is lingual papillitis, which is mostly small red and white bumps on the tongue.
New symptoms of Covid-19
The study was conducted after researchers from King’s College London and the British Association of Dermatologists linked the rash to Covid-19.
Veronique Bataille, Consultant Dermatology who led the corona virus study, said the research he conducted showed that rashes could predict Covid-19 more than fever and cough, especially in children.
“We found that one in six children developed a rash without other classic symptoms. Generally, the Covid-19 rash lasts for several weeks and eventually goes away. In some cases, a prescription drug may be needed if the rash is very itchy,” Bataille said as reported by The Sun.
The images collected with the Covid Symptom Study application also collect various information. They found that there are eight types of rashes that can be a sign of Covid-19, including rashes on red toes and hands, chest eczema, and pityriasis rosea.
Pityriasis rosea is a skin disease characterized by a red or pink rash that is scaly and slightly raised. The rash may or may not be itchy. Dr. Tanya Bleiker, President of the British Association of Dermatologists, said this research shows that the link between certain rashes and Covid-19 is becoming increasingly clear.
“Being able to recognize this is very important to reduce the spread of the disease. We will immediately release pictures of rashes or signs on the skin related to Covid-19 with the Covid Symptom Study team,” said Tanya.
