On Monday afternoon, the CDC, FHI’s sister institute in the USA, states that a new study shows that the pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines are 90 percent effective against covid-19, according to Washington Post.
4,000 people employed in occupations that are considered socially critical, such as health professionals and firefighters, participated in the study. The study finds that the vaccines are 80 percent effective against covid-19 after the first dose, and 90 percent effective after the second dose.
Previously, so-called phase 3 studies have been carried out, which have included around 20,000 to 30,000 participants. In these studies, it was found that the vaccines were somewhat more effective against covid-19, and that they were safe.

Studies
The CDC states that the participants in the new study were vaccinated in the period December to March, ie at the same time as the infection pressure was high in the USA.
Only 3 of 2479 fully vaccinated people were registered infected in connection with the study. In addition, only 8 out of 477 people who had received only one dose became infected. In comparison, 161 out of 994 non-vaccinated people developed covid-19 disease.

– Should give hope
“The vaccines provided early and significant protection against real-world infection to our nation’s health workers, emergency services and other socially critical personnel,” said CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, according to the Washington Post.
– These findings should give hope to those who have received the coronavirus vaccine, which affects millions of Americans every single day. The findings should also give hope to those who have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and accept vaccination in the coming weeks. These approved vaccines are the most important tool to help us end this terrible pandemic.
