New Study Suggests Link Between Oral Health and Brain Health: What You Need to Know

A new study in Japan has once again raised questions about the relationship between oral health (gum disease) and brain health (neurodegenerative disorders), which most experts agree are surprisingly interconnected.

The results proved that both issues are linked to a faster rate of atrophy in the hippocampus – the part of the brain that controls memory, learning and emotion. This is not the first time such a link has been made. In March, a US study found that poor oral health appears to be a factor. Major risk of stroke and dementia.

Satoshi Yamaguchi, lead author of the Japanese study, commented on his findings: “Maintaining healthier teeth without gum disease may help protect brain health.”

This is not just an academic interest. The World Health Organization estimates that severe gum disease, which is characterized by bleeding/swollen gums and damage to the tissues supporting the teeth, affects about 19% of the world’s adult population. This means that more than a billion people may be at risk of cognitive decline. Early due to the condition of their mouths.

What’s worse is that the nature of the relationship between mouth and brain appears to be bidirectional, meaning that cognitive decline tends to lead to poor oral health habits as well.

By emphasizing the value of brushing teeth and making healthy food choices where possible, they can help older adults protect their mouths against plaque and bacteria – and thus reduce their risk of neurodegenerative diseases, according to a study published in the journal Science Alert.
