A study conducted by American scientists presented a new explanation of the origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza, located on the west bank of the Nile River in Egypt.
Specialists from New York University assumed that the monumental structure could be a natural formation known as a yardang, which was formed by natural processes. This was reported by the publication “Pravda.ru” with reference to the journal Physical Review Fluids.
Yardanguri appear as a result of the erosion of sand and clay, sometimes taking the form of sitting or lying animals. They are found in desert areas with hot and dry climates, including northeastern Egypt. The ancient inhabitants of the country may have given the formation the shape of a legendary creature.
In a laboratory experiment, the authors of the paper recreated the conditions for the formation of yardangs. Soft clay was used as material, and to simulate the blowing wind, a jet of water was directed towards the relief structure. The experiment showed that such conditions can lead to the appearance of a figure that resembles a sphinx.
