New Study Shows Hearing Aid Users Have 24% Reduced Risk of Death

Adults who use hearing aids to treat hearing loss may reduce the risk of death, a new study shows. University of Southern California researchers published their findings in the journal The Lancet Healthy Longevity.

“We found that there is a 24% reduced risk of mortality for people with hearing aids,” said Dr. Janet Choi, a professor at the University of Southern California.

The study analyzed data from 10,000 people, including more than 1,800 individuals identified as having lost their hearing. Of these, a small group reported using hearing aids at least once a week, compared to a large number of individuals who claimed to never use hearing aids.

After studying the death rate between 1999 and 2012, the researchers found that there was no difference between people who used hearing aids once a week and those who did not use them at all. However, the study shows that people who used hearing aids had a reduced risk of death.

Hearing loss, according to the Mayo Clinic, especially affects adults over the age of 75. Factors that can lead to hearing loss can be damage to the inner ear or even earwax build-up.
