A study from Baylor College of Medicine has found that supplementing with GlyNAC, a compound made up of the amino acids glycine and N-acetylcysteine, can improve or reverse age-related cognitive decline in mice and humans. The compound acts as a precursor to the naturally occurring antioxidant glutathione, which is often deficient in older age and can lead to a range of brain abnormalities. Among the findings, GlyNAC supplementation reduced oxidative stress, inflammation and genomic damage and improved neurotrophic factors. This study provides hope that it may be possible to improve brain health and cognitive function in aging. Further research on the effects of GlyNAC supplementation on humans is warranted.
