New Study Shows Glucose in the Brain Can Decrease Drug Effectiveness for Fungal Meningitis Treatment

Chinese scientists have shown in a recent study that glucose in the brain can trigger an increased tolerance to at least one drug.

The drug that no longer has the expected effect is Amphotericin B, the only antifungal drug currently available to treat fungal meningitis.

The disease is caused by Cryptococus neoformans, a fungus that infects the human brain. Approximately 180,000 people die annually from this disease.

Scientists have noticed that there is a high incidence of treatment failure and recurrent infections in cryptococcal meningitis, which until now they could not explain.

The recent study, published in the journal Natureshowed that the culprit was glucose in the brain, which increased tolerance to the drug.

Fortunately, there are ways to solve this problem, and scientists have already identified a drug that increases the effectiveness of the treatment, which must be taken in tandem with it.
