Having a better knowledge of the Earth’s mantle in this region allowed us to create more reliable models for the chemical changes of magma as it penetrated the crust there, which is 20 cm thick. up to 30 kilometers, before the eruption occurred,” said Deegan, as quoted on Uppsala University’s official website.
