Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – People with type 2 diabetes have a risk of developing a deadly disease if they consume certain drinks incorrectly. This is the new finding of a recent study published in The BMJ, or British Medical Journal.

In the study it was also mentioned, if you have type 2 diabetes, drinking more coffee, tea, or water can reduce the risk of premature death from any cause of advanced disease by around 25%.

However, drinking more sugary drinks increased the risk of heart disease by 25% and the risk of death from a heart attack or other cardiovascular event by 29%.

Lol, how come?

“Certain drinks are actually more beneficial than others, depending on the types of drinks you’re comparing them to,” said study author Qi Sun, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. (22/4/2023)

The study analyzed data from nearly 15,500 adults with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. This data was also part of the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study in the United States.

Nearly 75% of the respondents in this study were women with an average age of 61 years.

Every two to four years for an average of 18 years, respondents answered questions about their consumption of eight types of drinks, such as artificially sweetened drinks, coffee, fruit, juice, low-fat and whole milk, water, tea and sugary drinks.

Analysis from this study showed that people who drank the most sugary drinks had a 20% higher risk of death from any cause compared to those who consumed the least.

Meanwhile, dying from cardiovascular-related events, such as heart attacks, increased by 29%. The risk of premature death increases by 8% for each additional serving a day.

That said, there is some good news for people who were heavy drinkers of sugary drinks before they were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

When those sugary drinks were replaced with coffee or artificial non-calorie drinks after diagnosis, the risk of premature death fell significantly.

When sugar- and artificially sweetened calorie-free beverages are replaced with coffee, tea, water, and low-fat milk, the risk of heart disease and death from any cause is even lower.

It is important to note that this study is observational in nature, so the findings cannot be seen through the lens of cause and effect.

“The case for avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages is very interesting,” said Nita Forouhi, program leader and investigator of nutritional epidemiology at the UK’s University of Cambridge. “Drink choice is definitely important.”
