The results of their study were obtained after examining a plesiosaur fossil named Eric with X-rays which then showed the animal’s last meal.
Eric’s own fossils were discovered in 1987 at the Coober Pedy opal mine, South Australia.
The Australian Opal Center explains the plesiosaur fossil is quite unique in that it has been a literal gem preserved in silica. This gives the framework a beautiful color.
Through this fossil, the researchers took a closer look and found that there were 17 previously unknown vertebrae from teleost fish. This shows that the plesiosaur was a pescatarian animal.
One of the researchers from the ANU Research School of Physics, Joshua White, said that Eric’s fossils were classified as complete with a percentage of 93%.
This figure can hardly be found in any fossil record that has been found, as reported by IFL Science, Tuesday (25/4/2023).
Plesiosaurs are thought to have lived around 208 million to 66 million years ago. Meanwhile, previous research has revealed that Eric lived between 120 million and 90 million years ago.
