Countless similarities between Mars and Earth could already be discovered, and researchers have now found a new one when they used several instruments to examine the southern mountainous region known as the Eridania region, which revealed 63 new volcanic structures to scientists.
The research used data from the Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to learn more about this special region. According to experts, the formations appear to be the result of changes under the Martian crust. Planetary scientists have classified these formations into four categories: volcanic domes, stratovolcanoes (layer volcanoes), shield volcanoes and caldera complexes.
Eridania area of Mars study uncovered evidence of tectonic activity roughly 3.5 billion years ago similar to that which caused tectonic plate movement on Earth. In addition, the discovery of underwater volcanic activity in the area of Eridania adds to the mystery, as it may have even led to the development of life.
