‘Getting a tattoo’ has become increasingly common both in Italy and in the world, especially among the youngest. According to a recent American study, however, the presence of the ink underneath our skin tissue could harm our health.

Tattoos worsen to body thermoregulation and therefore negatively affect our health. This is what emerges from a scientific study published by specialists from Southern Methodist University, in the United States, e published nel Journal of Applied Physiology.
The experts conducted research on a group of volunteers who had in common that they all had large tattoos on their bodies.
All were made to wear special uniforms capable of stimulating perspiration and, during the experiment, the reaction of the skin to changes in temperature was monitored.
At the end of the investigation, it was found that the areas without tattoos showed a normal reaction to thermal uniforms, while those tattooed were much less exposed to perspiration. Furthermore, it was established that the sweating of the tattooed skin turned out to be more salty than the non-tattooed one.
The scientists then noted that tattoos interfere with the skin’s sweating processes, a fact that could be considered “a potential long-term side effect.”
Previous studies
In 2017, another work of researchers from Alma College, Michigan, had made it possible to establish that tattooed skin is able to secrete 50% less sweat than non-tattooed skin, as the ink is found at a depth of between 3 and 5 millimeters under the skin tissue, exactly in correspondence with the sweat glands.
Experts have therefore defined tattoos as dangerous, as they can worsen perspiration and therefore hinder the body’s thermoregulation process which actually prevents it from overheating.
