New Study Finds that Energy Drinks and Soda Can Cause Male Pattern Baldness

A recent study has revealed that energy drinks, cola, and other sugary beverages can potentially cause male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness, the most common form of hair loss in men, is triggered by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a metabolite of male hormones. It is known to be influenced by factors such as stress, diet, and sleep habits. Typically, the hairline starts to recede and changes occur in the crown area from the late 20s onwards.

To investigate the correlation between sugary beverages and male pattern baldness, a research team led by Professor Ai Zhao from the Department of Dermatology at China’s Qinghua University conducted a study. The team surveyed the consumption of sugary beverages and the condition of hair health among 592 male pattern baldness patients with an average age of 27.8, as well as 436 individuals without hair loss. The sugary beverages included juices, carbonated drinks, energy drinks, isotonic drinks, and sugar-containing tea, coffee, and dairy products.

The results showed that individuals with hair loss consumed more sugary beverages compared to those without hair loss. The participants with hair loss consumed an average of 4293mL of sugary beverages per week, while those without hair loss consumed only 2513mL. Even after adjusting for sociodemographic factors, lifestyle, and psychological factors that could contribute to hair loss, the group that consumed more sugary beverages had a higher risk of developing male pattern baldness.

The research team explained that when blood sugar levels rise due to the consumption of sugary beverages, the polyol pathway, which converts glucose into other sugars, becomes activated. During this

What were the findings of Professor Ai Zhao’s study on the correlation between sugary beverage consumption and male pattern baldness?

A recent study conducted by Professor Ai Zhao and his research team from China’s Qinghua University has shed light on a potential correlation between sugary beverages and male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness, which is the most common form of hair loss in men, is triggered by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a metabolite of male hormones. This condition is known to be influenced by various factors such as stress, diet, and sleep habits.

The study aimed to investigate the impact of sugary beverage consumption on male pattern baldness. The research team surveyed 592 male pattern baldness patients with an average age of 27.8, as well as 436 individuals without hair loss. The participants were asked about their consumption of sugary beverages, which included juices, carbonated drinks, energy drinks, isotonic drinks, and sugar-containing tea, coffee, and dairy products.

The results of the study revealed that individuals with hair loss consumed a greater amount of sugary beverages compared to those without hair loss. On average, participants with hair loss consumed 4293mL of sugary beverages per week, while those without hair loss consumed only 2513mL. The correlation remained significant even after adjusting for factors such as sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, and psychological factors that could contribute to hair loss.

The research team provided an explanation for this correlation. When sugary beverages are consumed, blood sugar levels rise, activating the polyol pathway, which converts glucose into other sugars. This activation may contribute to the development of male pattern baldness.

While further research is needed to establish a definitive causal relationship between sugary beverage consumption and male pattern baldness, this study highlights the potential impact of diet on hair health. It suggests that reducing the intake of sugary beverages may be beneficial for individuals concerned about male pattern baldness.
