New study: COVID-19 is much more serious and deadly than influenza

The latest study found that coronavirus is three times more likely to kill patients than regular flu.

However, French doctors studied thousands of cases of both diseases and found that the mortality rate of 17% of those hospitalized with coronavirus is 17%, while that of patients with influenza is 5.8%.

In addition, patients with influenza spent an average of eight days in the intensive care unit, while patients with COVID-19 spent 15 days.

Patients with coronavirus twice as often as patients with influenza required mechanical ventilation. One in four patients with coronavirus developed acute respiratory failure, while among patients with influenza, this figure was 20%.

“Our study to compare these two diseases became the largest and confirmed that COVID-19 is much more serious than influenza,” said Catherine Cantin, one of the leaders of the study at Dijon University Hospital.
