The vast majority of patients with an autoimmune disease make just as many protective antibodies after two corona vaccinations as healthy people, even if they take medicines to suppress their immune system. This is according to the Dutch Volkskrant from a large national study led by researchers from the Amsterdam UMC and blood bank Sanquin, the first results of which were announced on Saturday.

It is the first study worldwide that provides clarity about this large group of patients. Immunologist and research leader Taco Kuijpers calls the results “beyond expectations”. The findings have been shared with Minister Hugo de Jonge, who will have to decide next week which patients are eligible for a third corona jab in the Netherlands. Kuijpers expects that only a small part of all patients with an autoimmune disease will be invited.
The research results are important in the Netherlands alone for hundreds of thousands of patients with, among other things, rheumatism, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases. They often take drugs to prevent their immune system from turning against them.
