New Study Challenges Moon’s Interior: Could it be Entirely Solid?

It turns out that its interior may not be liquid, but entirely solid

Researchers from Germany, the Czech Republic and the United States have conducted a new study that could revolutionize our understanding of the Moon’s interior and how it formed.

For a long time, scientists believed that there was a partially molten layer beneath the moon’s crust that was responsible for its formation.

But new modeling presented by the researchers points to the possibility that such a molten layer may not exist at all.

Instead, the Moon’s mantle beneath its surface may be solid throughout its volume.

If this new interpretation turns out to be correct, it could dramatically change our understanding of the processes that led to the formation of the Moon.

It all depends on which model turns out to be true, and more research and more lunar samples are needed to establish the truth.

Planetary scientist Mikaela Valterova from the German Aerospace Center in Berlin, together with her colleagues, applied a comparative analysis of two different models of the internal structure of the Moon.

To do this, scientists have studied the rhythmic cycles of the moon’s motion and its effect on Earth’s tides to gain insight into the density, viscosity and hardness of materials inside the moon.

Observations show that the Moon periodically deforms, and researchers suggest that this is due to the existence of a molten layer inside the Moon’s mantle.

However, the new results allow us to consider another hypothesis – that the deformation of the Moon may be due to the behavior of solid rocks at low temperatures.

So far, neither of these two hypotheses can be disproved or confirmed because there is not enough data. To solve this mystery, further research and samples of the lunar soil are needed.

The moon continues to fascinate scientists with its mysteries, and although scientists have been able to gain a deeper understanding of its inner workings, there are still many questions that need to be answered.
