New Street Vendor Rules to Prohibit Presence on Brooklyn Bridge—City Implements Changes

At first glance, the commercial activity of street vendors on the famous Brooklyn Bridge seems normal, but the hours allowed for their presence are numbered.

The authorities asked sellers to remove their products before midnight on Tuesday.

This is because the New York City Department of Transportation will implement new rules that will prohibit the presence of street vendors on bridges.

These city traffic rules, published on October 6, will officially go into effect this Wednesday, January 3.

The main objective is to free spaces for pedestrians and cyclists from obstructions caused by both licensed and unlicensed vendors.

According to a statement from the city Department of Transportation, the bridge aisle is narrow at less than 5 feet in certain areas.

They highlighted that selling in this space is dangerous due to the crowd, as it interrupts the flow of people and makes it difficult to safely exit the bridge.

However, street vendors say it’s not fair for the city to displace them without having a plan for them. Meanwhile, some tourists regret that these vendors have to be displaced.

According to city data, pedestrian traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge has increased in recent years.

In 2022, the average was 34,000 pedestrians, doubling the 17,000 in 2021.
