New Street in Oppenrod Named in Honor of Opera Singer Christa Ludwig

Giessen General District Giessen

Buseck (cos). The new street in the Rahberg II development area in Oppenrod will be called Christa-Ludwig-Straße, as the local council unanimously decided at the recent meeting. The justification stated that the opera singer had lived in Oppenrod for some time and the street name had not yet been assigned.

Christa Ludwig achieved some fame throughout her life. She sang at operas in Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris and New York, among others. In 2004 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her achievements.

Born in Berlin in 1928 and died in Austria in 2021, Ludwig’s life was marked by several changes of location. Her mother was an opera singer and her father was an opera director. In 1943 the family moved to Giessen to work at the city theater. During the war, however, opera operations were largely stopped. In an air raid on St. Nicholas Day 1944, the Ludwigs’ house on Marburger Strasse was completely destroyed. The family fled on foot to Oppenrod to live with Antonie and Heinrich Bitsch, who had previously worked as a dramaturge at the Giessen Theater.

With the end of the war, Ludwig’s career took off. She had her first major appearance at the age of 17 at the city theater in Giessen. An engagement at the opera in Frankfurt soon followed. From there they traveled all over the world.

One of her maxims was: “You have to sing with the voice you have, not the one you wish you had.”
