New Strain of Swine Influenza Virus Transmitted to Humans Confirmed in the United States

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that a case of human infection with a new strain of influenza virus transmitted from pigs has been confirmed in the United States.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received and analyzed samples from residents who showed flu symptoms at the end of last month and determined that they were infected with the swine influenza mutant (H1N2v) virus. After notifying the WHO of this result, the CDC is conducting follow-up tests such as genetic sequencing.

The patient showed symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, and diarrhea, and was treated in the emergency room on the 29th of last month. It was also confirmed that he had been exposed to pigs at an agricultural fair in Michigan about 10 days before the outbreak.

The WHO said, “As of the 10th of this month, no human-to-human H1N2v infection has been confirmed other than the case of this patient.”

“While the infected person’s illness was mild and there was no further spread to the community, this H1N2v outbreak warrants close monitoring given its potential impact on public health,” he added.

The WHO announced that the number of human infections of swine influenza mutant virus since 2005 in the United States, including this case, has reached 37.
