Scientists in New York discovered a new strain of coronavirus in samples obtained in November that would already account for 12% of current cases.

Variant B.1.526 has the same mutations as that found in South Africa and they fear that, in addition to being more contagious and deadly, they will not be immunized by vaccines that are currently on the market.
“The general pattern of mutations in this lineage suggests that it arose in part in response to the selective pressure of antibodies“said the scientists at the California University of Technology (Caltech) who discovered the new strain.
The studies have not yet been published in scientific journals but experts claim that the spread exists. A team from Columbia University Medical Center is also credited with finding the genetic variation.
Recently, they also identified a new strain of the virus in California. The United States is the country with the highest number of deaths from coronavirus in the world with 507,000. New York City has more than 29,000.
