Lübeck – Here we go again. After a five-week summer break, the second division footballers, the Lübeck Cougars, start on Sunday at 3 p.m. with the Assindia Cardinals in Essen.
the initial situation
The Cougars start the season in third place, have four wins and two defeats under their belt. The break was a week shorter for the Cardinals, the men from the Ruhr area already played at the Rostock Griffins last weekend and lost 7:35. With two wins and four defeats, the Essen team is currently seventh in the table.

The opponent
The Assindia Cardinals were founded in 1983 and can already boast several seasons in the second-highest German football league. Since 2012 they have been part of the GFL2 again. Head coach Bernd Janzen’s team has been making a name for itself this season with its very physical running game featuring American running back Brett Sylve.
The stats
The Cougars and Cardinals have met a total of eleven times in their history. The record: 8:3 for the “mountain lions”. Last year, the Cougars won 22-12.

The staff
The Cougars will be without quarterback Jadrian Clark for the remainder of the season. The offense is therefore led by Dylan VanBoxel against Essen. The American from Green Bay is an old acquaintance in the GFL2. He played for the Rostock Griffins in the 2021 season and then in Mexico for the Juarez Jefes. In eight games in the GFL, he had 1,487 passing yards and 18 touchdowns with just three interceptions.
That’s what the coach says
Mark Holtze, Special Teams Coordinator: “After last week’s turbulence, we need to focus on what’s important. Stopping Essen’s running game is sure to be the hardest task. Our offense has to find its rhythm, which isn’t easy after the long break either. We are already leaving for Essen on Saturday so that we can prepare in peace.”
