That “Star Trek” Only ran for three seasons in the 1960s and was canceled by NBC due to low ratings, the legacy of Gene Roddenberry’s creation in the world of movies and series is almost unmatched. Every child knows more than 50 years, seven real-life series, two animation series and 13 movies later Star Trek.
Since the very first Star-Trek– The 1979 movie, a new Enterprise Crew adventure was usually shown in theaters every two to three years. The biggest break so far was between the 2002 flopped one Star Trek: Nemesis and the quasi-reboot released six and a half years later Star Trek by JJ Abrams. Abrams’ film presented the world with a new, larger vision of the Star-Trek-Universe that gave preference to the visual spectacle and blockbuster action over the spirit of research and discovery. Achieved in this way Star Trek on the one hand the mainstream and the big box office success, but also angered many die-hard Trekkies who no longer recognized their world in Abrams’ films.
Still enjoyed the Star-Trek-Films with Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock popular. After the third film, Star Trek Beyond, however, ended abruptly, although development of the fourth had already started before Beyond appeared at all. Salary negotiations with Pine and Chris Hemsworth, who was slated to return as Kirk’s father via a time travel plot, failed, and Paramount put the film, which was to be directed by SJ Clarkson, on hold. While more and more “Star Trek”-Series are produced, was the future of Star Trek uncertain in the cinema. For a while it seemed as if Quentin Tarantino of all people could come up with his idea of an R-ratedTrek-Films breathe new life into the franchise. Then became “Fargo”-Creator Noah Hawley tasked with scripting a new film that wanted to get back to basics.
However, both projects were also halted, Hawley’s among other things, because it was allegedly about a devastating pandemic. Paramount’s head of production Emma Watts was commissioned to create the future of the Star-Trek– Re-evaluate franchises in the cinema in order to find the right way forward.
Whatever this is supposed to look like, it seems to have been found, because a few days ago Paramount surprisingly got the 9.06.2023 as a US theatrical release of a new one Star-Trek-Films announced. This is almost seven years behind Star Trek Beyond making it the longest break between two films in the franchise. The German start date has not yet been set.
So far, no details about the new film have been revealed, other than that it will be produced by JJ Abrams again. What we can say for sure is that this is neither Tarantino’s nor Hawley’s project. Nor is it that Star-Trek-Film made for a few weeks ago “Star Trek: Discovery”-Author Kalinda Vasquez was hired. Because she writes one too Star-Trek-Cinema film to be produced by Abrams, but separate from the film announced for 2023.
There is of course the faint hope that the crew around Chris Pine might still be able to return for a new adventure, but given the long break and Paramount’s long search for new ideas, I wouldn’t bet on it.
At the latest with the big official one “Star Trek”-Convention in Chicago in April 2022, the first details about the new film are likely to be revealed. In any case, I’m happy to finally be back in the year after next Star-Trek-To be able to immerse yourself in the cinema.
