The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) underpins the Qi standard and its certification. According to the WPC, one problem today is that end users and resellers are finding it difficult to navigate all the proprietary versions of wireless charging available. A problem that the consortium now intends to solve with the introduction of a sequel to Qi, which not entirely unexpectedly takes the name of Qi2.
The new standard uses Apple’s Mag Safe technology as a basis, where Apple together with other WPC members developed the Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile, which is supposed to ensure that the coils in the charger and in the device are better centered towards each other . According to WPC, this allows for faster charging and greater efficiency. As a result of the latter, the lower heat development is also an advantage.
In addition to mobile phones, VR headsets are also cited as examples of potential usage areas where Qi2 can be implemented. Qi2 replaces Qi and WPC aims to have chargers and phones implementing the new standard available for purchase in Q4 2023.
