New Species of Lizard Discovered in Mizoram, India

MrA team of researchers from Soram University and the Max Planck Institute for Biology in Tübingen, Germany has also discovered a new species of lizard from the Indo-Myanmar border state of Mizoram. This new lizard can move very fast. Researchers also call it ‘parachute gecko and gliding geckos’. Pallican geckos are small, carnivorous species found in warm climates around the world. What sets them apart among lizards is their vocalization and loud mating call. The new species is named after the state of Mizoram, Gecko mizoramensis.

This species, found in Mizoram, has previously been found in many parts of South Asia, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia. Detailed information about the new species was published in the latest issue of Salamandra, a German journal of herpetology, or the study of amphibians and reptiles. The new species resembles its sister species, Gecko poppensis. But the new variety is different in morphology and colors. The newly discovered species is 7-14 percent different from its sibling species, the study said.

There are 13 species of them worldwide and they are found in Southeast Asia. Among them, only one species, Ptychozoon lionotum or smooth-backed gliding gecko, has been found in Mizoram,” said Prof. Department of Zoology, University of Mizoram. Hmar Tlavmte Lalremsanga said.
