New solar farm from April 1, 2022. Net-billing takes effect. Will photovoltaics still be profitable after the changes in the billing?

People who set up a solar farm after April 1, 2022, in accordance with the amendment to the RES Act, will make their settlements in the net-billing system. This raises many concerns among current and future prosumers. The most frequently asked questions include whether photovoltaics will still pay off at all? We check what the experts have to say on this topic. We explain what net-billing is.

The changes in photovoltaics, which will enter into force on April 1, have been known for several months. Prosumers will be accounted differently than before.

“Surplus energy produced by solar panels will have to be sold to the grid, and the consumed power will have to be bought like everyone else, at higher retail prices,” explains Bartłomiej Jaworski, Senior Product Manager at Eaton.

The new regulations put the profitability of photovoltaics into question, so we are checking whether the use of solar energy will still make sense?

“The power produced by photovoltaics has so far been settled in the discount system. The prosumer could return its surplus to the network and, if necessary, collect up to 80%. The power grid was therefore a kind of power storage for users of hundreds of thousands of installations. All those who have submitted an application for connecting the panels to the network by March 31, 2022 will still be able to settle accounts according to the current rules for 15 years. The rest will be covered by changes, ”explains Bartłomiej Jaworski.
