Since 2020, a pot called HOUSEPLANTS has been simmering in the lowlands of Limburg. Earlier this year, singer Marino Roosen and producer Pieter-Jan Decraene (Sam De Nef, Rhinos Are People Too) released two singles with “GROUNDHOGDaY” and “ELEPHaNT” mixing sugary pop sound with dark samples and a solid cup of electronics. Surrounded by musicians like Nick Caers (The Haunted Youth) and Bram Gabriëls (Homegirl), “SHOWDIVES” also became a song in that sense. The song’s edgy electronic skeleton, put together by Decraene, is further graced by Roosen’s smooth vocals. The song has incredible potential for ears and is reminiscent of the young Tame Impala.
The match for “SHOWDIVES” was in fact already buzzing in 2014, when Mexico’s World Cup match against the Netherlands turned into a victory for the latter, thanks to a fake dive by a Dutch sjotter. Marino Roosen’s chagrin has found refuge in the lyrics of “SHOWDIVES”: ‘If the ends justify the means, does it allow you to cheat?’ On the eve of the World Cup, this song is a call for fair play in football (and maybe beyond). Today the video clip that accompanies the song has also seen the light. The show dives from the song are represented in a playful cartoon style by Genk’s swimming club Neptunus. They show the only dives that are welcome in the sport. Both family members of the musicians and Sam De Nef, poulain of Pieter-Jan Decraene, have a role in the video clip.
Where the clip keeps it local and welcoming, ‘SHOWDIVES’ has what it takes to finish off Limburg. We therefore like to keep an eye on the band. The HOUSEPLANTS debut album, Escalatorwill be released in March 2023.
