‘And all that jazz…’ Today, the Broadway vibes as John Kander once composed them so beautifully for the dazzling musical Chicago only sporadically found within the music genre. We can’t call that regrettable, however, as this gave jazz the opportunity to evolve into one of the most open-minded genres within the music landscape. Everything is possible, everything is allowed. This is also proven by PAARD., a frenzied experimental jazz trio that is brimming with talent and knows how to surprise time and again with their qualitative melodies. Live they certainly knew how to prove themselves and also ep SALMON. made us curious about more of the men. Their long-awaited debut album will be released in November and we were given a taste of it three times for the time being.
In that third foretaste they take a slightly different approach than we do at PAARD. to be used to. They test the limits of experimentation without hesitation and go all-in for a hip-hop song. That seems a bit atypical at first sight, but on closer inspection it is not that surprising since bassist Owen Perry Weston has a background in the hip-hop scene. Weston takes the lead in the song and provides the rapping vocals through “Dentiste Virtuose” with his juicy Ghent accent. Partners in crime Wim Segers, on the vibraphone/synths, and Sigfried Burroughs, on the drums, provide a heap of greasy beats as support, so that we are actually completely up to date with the new path the boys are taking. If you listen more closely, you will certainly hear the more recognizable sound of the band, thanks to Segers’ vibraphone, among other things. An unexpected twist from PAARD., but that only makes us more curious about the upcoming album!
